Airless spraying

Your most frequently asked questions on airless spraying answered

There are so many different tip sizes, we like to simplify things by mainly sticking to using just 3. For spraying walls we recommend using a high pressure tip in size 515. For spraying ceilings we recommend using a high pressure tip in size 619. For most woodwork we recommend using a low pressure fine finish tip in size 310 (210 for spindles). Check out our walls, ceilings and woodwork spray tip bundle here.

It depends on a number of factors. What are you spraying? What paint are you using? What’s the temperature. There’s no one pressure that works for everything. Watch our recent YouTube video where we answer the question in full: https://youtu.be/j_PPsbCrUuk

It depends on what work you do. Different airless sprayers are better for different types of work. If you’re not sure, you’re best off getting in touch with us as we can advise you. But to give you an idea on budget, an airless sprayer will cost you on average around £1,000 to £2,000.

Don’t just go off what everyone else is using and follow the trends. Try a few different brands and see what works for you. We like using Sayerlack waterbased on our woodwork and Tikkurila paints on our walls but everyone is different. Try out a few and see what works for you.

If you want to give your customer the best spray finish possible, you’ll want to use air assisted airless spraying. An air assisted airless sprayer will cost between £2,000 and £3,000 on average.

You can use your airless sprayer, however it’s not designed to give a fine finish. You can try to get around this but you will likely have problems with there being too much overspray. You will also not achieve as good a spray finish as if you were using air assisted airless. You may notice an orange-peel effect on your spray finishes.

If you search online, you’ll be able to find airless sprayer conversion packages. However, you’re always going to be limited by this. In our opinion, by the time you’ve gone to effort to convert your airless, you wouldn’t be too far off the cost of an air assisted airless and the spray finish is unlikely to be much better.

You may see others doing this on social media. You can spray kitchens completely in a customers home, but do you want to? In our opinion, it’s not the right way to do it. It won’t look professional to your customer, you’ll be limited to only certain jobs if your customer doesn’t have a large enough home to create a spray booth in, you’ll no doubt have headaches with overspray, you won’t be able to give as good of a spray finish, you won’t be able to charge as much because you’ll be causing a large disturbance to your customer and in our opinion it’s just not the right way to do it. We would recommend either hiring or investing in your own premises to do the job properly, have less headaches and be able to charge a higher price.

What paints you should use completely depends on your set up and what facilities you have. Get in touch with us if you’d like advice that is specific to you.

Yes you can, there are some great waterbased options available on the market now. However, be aware that when using a waterbased system if you add any of the additive products such as crosslinkers or hardeners then you are adding harmful chemicals and so you need to be careful.

UPVC spraying

Your most frequently asked questions on UPVC spraying answered

You can get a start-up kit for spraying UPVC at a relatively low cost. For example, our UPVC Ultimate Kit is just £1,200 + VAT. It’s a plug-in and go system that is lightweight and affordable. Whichever package you go for, don’t pay over the odds as it isn’t necessary.

You’ll want to use a 2k product (two-part product) for spraying UPVC as your paint needs to be durable and long lasting in all weathers. We recommend Selemix Direct for exteriors. We wouldn’t use this for interiors however.

UPVC spraying is very easy to get started up with quickly. You technically don’t need any previous experience. The prep work is straight forward, as is the spraying method. You can do a training course in spraying UPVC and get started straight away.

You can earn good money fast. For example, for an average front door we would charge around £400. Depending on the circumstances, this can usually be done in a morning. So you can see that you can easily make the same or better money in less time than what you’re doing at the moment.

Marketing tips

Your most frequently asked questions on marketing for spraying jobs answered

The easiest place to start is your current customer list. Send them an email, or a call to let them know what services you’re offering. The more you spray, shout about it on your socials and your website and you’ll become more known for it.

Google ads. If you think, a potential customer searching for your services on Google is much more likely to be ready to buy and book in with you than someone scrolling blindly on Facebook or Instagram. You don’t have to pay for advertising but if you’re ready to give your sales that bump, we would recommend setting up a Google ad.

Use Google’s free keyword research tool to see what customers are searching for in terms of your services. Set up a Google ad around these search terms. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, just get it going. There are plenty of options for Google to take control and optimise your ad for you. They’ll also speak to you for free and advise you on how to improve your ad. Just get started with it.

You’re busy, that’s a given. There are ways that you can make it easier for yourself. Buy a tripod for your phone, set it up and press record. You can easily put together a time lapse of what you’re doing and post to socials. It doesn’t have to be ground breaking or heavily edited. Take a video pan around of the job you’re doing before you start and on completion. You should do this anyway to cover your back in case the customer complains. If you’re struggling to keep up with all the different platforms, just focus on the one you feel you get the most from.
